October 20, 2008--WING Becomes the Toast of Broadway
photo
Without a doubt, New York City is the home of many of the best live singers in the world today. But on this night, ONE VOICE was heard loudly and clearly above all the rest.  It was the voice of WING, the Asian sensation who has been compared to Florence Foster Jenkins and Barbra Streisand.  In her one-night only performance, WING performed an eclectic mix of songs ranging from Abba to Andrew Lloyd Weber to the Beetles and the Bee Gees.  Her range simply knows no limits.  With 16 CDs to her credit, I wondered what she would pick for this momentous evening.  I must say she chose brilliantly.  WING simply could do no wrong.  She started with Dancing Queen and moved on to Don't Cry For Me Argentina. How could she top that? Effortlessly with AC/DC's Highway to Hell.  It just never stopped coming. One triumph after the other.  Still, in an evening of constant showstoppers, there were standouts: Think of Me, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, The Phantom of the Opera, In the Ghetto and more.  Her selection of Broadway songs was so fitting for this evening in the heart of Broadway.  What can I say? There are moments you wait for and dream of all your life. This was one of those moments.

PS: Shame on producer Andy Sandberg for transporting WING in a TAXI!!! I caught her arrival at Birdland.  I couldn't believe this Diva was coming out of that dingy, old cab.  The horror!  Nothing less than a limo should have been used!
