June 28, 2006--Back FROM Broadway
I just returned from the Great White Way.  I saw five shows over the weekend:  Sweeney Todd, Mamma Mia, The Wedding Singer, The History Boys, and Hairspray.  Two shows clearly stood out as must sees for theatre fans:  Mamma Mia and Hairspray.  The Wedding Singer was also fun but could have been better.  The latest production of Sweeney Todd is just as overrated as Stephen Sondheim is himself.  Sweeney needs great direction to come off as a good show, this version kind of missed the mark.  The childish red lighting during each murder was something a schoolkid could have thought of.  What a shame.  Still, worth a peak if you have nothing else to see.  The huge disappointment, though, was The History Boys.  This winner of six Tonys is little more than an ill-concieved, poorly staged snoozefest.  It is probably the worst show I have ever seen.  And I have seen some bad ones (eg, La Cava, Taboo, ...)

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to the Big Apple next month and this will help me make informed choices as to what shows to see and not to see. By the way, nice play on words, as always (BFB).
